In these days of giant "multiplex" movie theaters, the small town
theatre is only a distant memory. Today a small theatre simply cannot compete
with the big state-of-the-art theatres and the cost for a small theatre to show
movies is beyond its reach.
But one way for a small town theatre to survive is to become more than a movie theatre and offer live music, a place for community meetings, a place for educational programs, a practice hall for local musicians and students and, yes, a place to watch movies. As a non-profit multi-functional community theatre, enlisting the help of volunteers, the future of the Buchanan Theatre is assured.
Standing Room Only, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose sole purpose is the support of the Buchanan Theatre. We develop the entertainment programs, gather the volunteers, coordinate the events with the theatre's owners and promote the theatre to the community and beyond.
Buchanan is very fortunate that a local couple, Dale and Gloria Carter, have purchased the theatre in an effort to save it from decay. The Carters as well as volunteers from SRO have helped restore the theatre so that it operates today.
You
can show your support for the Buchanan Theatre by joining
Standing Room Only, Inc. as an individual member. Your $12 membership fee helps
provide the finances SRO needs to keep the theatre going and maintaining low
cost entertainment.
The support of volunteers has been encouraging. Naturally there's plenty of work to be done to keep the theatre operating. We welcome everyone's help and invite you visit and volunteer. For more information about volunteering contact standingroomnews@aol.com
